What exactly is Facebook Pixel?

Facebook Pixel is a tracker in essence. This clever little piece of code is Facebook's very own analytic tool. It sits in the background of your website, out of view, tracking your customer's every move. Not just on Facebook and Instagram, but over multiple websites too.

How does Facebook Pixel Work?

The Facebook Pixel uses cookies to track your customers. It can track what your customers see, click, what is bought and what is left in the cart. Not only does it record your customer's actions or ‘Events’ (we will discuss Events a little later), but it also records your customer's information, ie, their age, their gender, their interests, anything they share openly with the browser they are using - kind of scary when you think about it.

It isn't all automatic though, you will still need to tell Facebook Pixel who and what to target. It is a computer after all and not a mind reader. You can select the Events it looks out for and the audiences in which to target.

Within the settings of Facebook Pixel, you can tell it which events to track and what groups of audiences to track, for example, age, gender etc. Some of these rules can be pretty basic and can get rather advanced the more you look into it. It will just be a case of playing around with these settings and monitoring what settings work best for your freewebstore. These settings can also be configured so you can track the sales that did convert as well as the ones that didn’t. By monitoring the stats, which Facebook Pixel so cleverly provides, you can experiment with other targeting options such as ‘Lookalike audiences’, ‘Standard and custom events’ and ‘Custom Conversions’.

In short, you can use Facebook Pixel to:

  • Make sure that your Facebook ads are shown to the right people.
  • Drive more sales. Set up automatic bidding to reach people who are more likely to to purchase on your freewebstore.
  • Measure the results of your ads. Better understand the effect of your Facebook adverts by measuring what happens when people see them.

What Events can you Track?

There are many standard events to track. To name but a few:

  • Page View: Track visitors who land on your freewebstore.
  • Purchase: Someone completes a purchase on your website.
  • Search: Someone uses the search function to look for something on your site.
  • Contact: Someone contacts your business.

Why should I enable Facebook Pixel on my freewebstore?

If you use Facebook shops, you should definitely take advantage of Facebook Pixel. It is an incredibly useful tool for marketing on Facebook. Along with showing you what happens when someone sees your advertisements, it can save you money in advertising costs. An experiment by Adespresso called the ‘AdEspresso $1000 experiment’ proved that without Facebook Pixel, you would have to spend $3400 on advertising that with Facebook Pixel, would only cost $1000. That’s a saving of over 70%. You would be mad not to utilize this tool...it's free.
